Download Limits
Download limits protect your digital content from being shared freely. You can restrict how many times a file can be downloaded per purchase.
Default settings
| Setting | Default |
|---|---|
| Max downloads per purchase | 3 |
| Link expiry | 5 minutes |
| Rate limit | 10 downloads per hour |
These defaults work well for most use cases. A customer can download the file up to 3 times total — enough for downloading on their laptop, phone, and making a backup.
Changing the download limit
On the digital product, open the Digital Files section and look for Max downloads. Enter the number of times a customer may download this specific file.
Recommended values:
- eBooks, PDFs: 3–5
- Music / audio: 5–10
- Large assets or software: 2–3
- Unlimited: set to 0 (no limit)
If customers regularly contact you saying their download expired, increase the limit. A limit of 5 is generous without being too open.
What happens when a limit is reached
When a customer has used all their downloads:
- They see a "Download limit reached" message
- They can contact you to request a reset
- You can manually reset their download count from the order detail view (Orders → find the order → Digital downloads → Reset)
Rate limiting
The platform enforces a rate limit of 10 download attempts per hour per customer. This prevents automated bulk downloading scripts. Genuine customers never hit this limit.
No expiry option
Download links themselves expire after 5 minutes for security — this is not configurable. But the access (being allowed to generate a new link) persists indefinitely up to the max download count.
So a customer who buys today can still download next year — they just need to visit their account or click the email link to generate a fresh 5-minute URL.
